On a quest for the ultimate cannabis edible
A very easy home-made recipe to mix up for on-the-go medicating. Decarboxylate your concentrate, wax, honeycomb, shatter or oil first or it will NOT work. And that would just suck.
It always says to make sure and decarboxylate your concentrate. I can’t find out how to do this! Please explain. Lots of places describe how to decarboxylate trim or buds but not oil, wax or shatter.
Thanks for your help
Hi Liz: They say only decarboxylate your starting material if you want your edibles to work! All joking aside, you need a heatproof vessel, proper temperature and time and that’s it. Have you seen our section on decarboxylation? It can be found here.. I prefer to visualize this process and do it in a pot of canola oil heated to 250ºF. Make sure to suspend your vessel off the bottom of the pot with some chopsticks or bamboo skewers to prevent direct contact with bottom of pan (bad idea). Let us know how things go!
Is it just as effective if I decarb my weed before I reduce it in oil? Or is that redundant? I decarb in a glass baking dish inside an oven bag…240 degrees for one hour, than into the freezer for a day or so. I make my hash oil with everclear.
Hey Sue: To me, this is just an extra step. It may be crazy to some, but we dehydrate fresh bud for 8-10 hours on a cheap meat and fruit dehydrator, grind to your favorite consistency, and run the Everclear over fresh, non-decarbed bud. Then, when the alcohol is evaporating, you watch that bubbling action- that’s decarboxylation happening right in front of your eyes: http://tokesieroll.com/decarboxylation/ But definitely freeze the dried bud and the Everclear for at least 24 hours and only keep the two in contact for no more than 3 minutes, with a gentle shake at each minute, replacing it in the freezer after each shake. Keep that stuff cold for the best pull of oil. Good luck and let us know what happens.
Obviously, be safe and use precautions when evaporating your ethanol or any flammable solvents.
Hi,
New to cooking these edibles, but doing all I can to read and prepare my kitchen, with a newly acquired fracture of my left wrist, which makes this all the more fun….grr.lol Anyway, a little help?
I’ve never made hash oil, and probably won’t for at least a few months. I did make cannabutter(unsalted butter) and canna-coconut oil. I think I used close to 1/2 oz and up of trim, mediocre weed and a few nugs just “because.” I made both in a crockpot, but used no water for the coconut oil. Actually, for both butters I decarbed at 240d for 45 minutes, and basically kept crockpot on simmer for 24 hours.
Is it possible to make the candy here (or the gummies on the other page), with what I have right now, or do I absolutely need BHO? Coconut oil is considered a vegetable glycerin, but I’m hoping I can get the same effects using really well-infused oil.
Any help would be appreciated.
Also, one more question: It seems like I could use the squeezed leftover material for something else, like bread? What do you think?
Also, also – A little hint for someone maybe? I had to forego using the spoons to squeeze my mini weed balls (much easier to handle), and used my lemon orange squeezer, which did a fantastic job.
Hi: Glad to see so many people trying edibles!!! They really are the best way to medicate, and the healthiest option too. Have you titrated your oil yet (how much oil does it take for you to feel an effect)? Once you figure this amount out, and it’s not too much, you can absolutely try this out with any of the candy or recipes on this site. Obviously a small gummy cannot hold as much infused coconut oil as a cookie or brownie, but they are portable and strong! Not sure that coconut oil is is considered a vegetable glycerine… where did you hear that? Regardless, you can keep the leftover plant material, but it can cause some stomach upset, so be careful there. Thanks for the tip on using a lemon/orange squeezer!!! Squeezing weed oil/butter through cheesecloth is one of my least favorite things to do ;)
How much Hash Oil do I need to use to make the 200mg ones?
Hey Stephanie- Go for the gusto! Nice!! Just do the math to figure out dosage. If you want 200 mg THC in each candy and you make 20 pieces, you’d need 4 Grams of THC (not 4 grams of oil), provided your concentrate is 100% pure, which is not possible. Most concentrates are 60-80% pure, which means that if you still wanted to make 200 mg candies, you’d need to do the following math: 4000 mg THC is what’s wanted, and you had 65% pure wax, shatter, etc. so: 4000mg(4G)/.65(65%) = 6.154 grams of oil. That’s quite a bit of oil for 20 pieces of candy and unless it’s made from bud by someone who really cares about making tasty oil, that amount will probably be too much even for those of us who really, really enjoy our edibles. Trust me, 3 smaller 80 mg candies are way tastier and easier to spread out than trying to choke down a possibly nasty piece of candy. If they end up being too strong or nasty, just re-melt them and add more plain caramel or Tootsie Roll. Easy Peasy. Tread lightly friend, medicate safely, and let us know what happens please!
can i use cannabutter instead of concentrate?
Hi Tom: Depending on how strong your butter is and your tolerance, you could probably make these with canna butter. I would make a practice batch first just to make sure they set up properly. Good luck and let us know how they turn out!
What is the BEST way to melt decarbed hash in to butter or coconut oil? I’ve grounded the has in a coffee grinder to a fine powder, but it never seemed to melt or dissolve into the butter or oil. And it seems that 4-6 grams of cannabis is not enough for desired medical results. I made jolly ranches (40) with 5 gms of Black Afghani hash (decarbed) and no one felt any effects. I went up to 18 gms and BINGO! By the way, I use the Ardent Nova/Lift for decarbing and the Magical Butter Machine for the butter and oil. Any suggestiuons?
Hey Tom: Remember that hash/keif can have fibrous material in it still and it will never dissolve completely into butter or oil… you will always have the granularity to deal with unless you filter it. Also, keif isn’t usually as potent as most people think it is, and usually undershoot their edibles when using keif/hash unless you know the potency. Good luck and happy medicating!
Did you try cannabutter with this and if so how did it turn out
We’ve heard you can and the recipe does work, but you should experiment first to see how much canna butter or canna oil this will hold and still set up properly.
How did you make the wrappers? Is there a download? Thx.
Just Google sticker companies. You just upload your artwork and you get pre-cut stickers in about a week!
Just made a test batch of these. I used infused coconut oil, and i’m not sure it was incorporated with tootsie roll mixture, it seemed oily when I rolled the rope out. Have any tips on how best to incorporate the oil into the mix?
